The classic Project Management triangle shows the key attributes and constraints in any project. My approach extends this baseline with a multidimensional approach to successfully deliver projects.

Methodology: It is important to understand and live the respective project management methodology. Project team members but also the senior management should have at least basic knowledge of the methodology if necessary coached by the project manager.

Accountability: Responsibilities and roles of each project team member should be made very clear at the project start already. Project team members need to feel 100% accountable for their tasks.

Culture: Do people identify with the company? Is there a code of ethics? What are the company’s values? This all is important to minimise project risks and align team members around shared goals.

Sustainability: The outcome and success of a project may not be measured immediately after project closure. Post project reviews are required to see whether the goals of a project are still valid, return of investment has been achieved or new business has been generated.

Vision: One of the most important things is the vision of the company and the programme management. To stick on the project goals, time, budget and scope is essential for a project manager. But a good project manager should always broaden the horizon and see the big picture of how the project will fit into the goals and objectives of the programme and vision of the company.
